They explain the nature of an illness and advise the patient and family on how to effectively deal with symptoms and treatment. A medical social worker also serves as a grief counselor to help patients and families deal with the trauma of experiencing a chronic or acute illness.
Care Planning: Families and patients often do not know where to turn to get medical care. A medical social worker assists patients and families in finding and arranging services such as in home care, nursing home care and counseling.
Financial Assistance: Acute and chronic illnesses are expensive. Families may not be able to financially provide for the care of an ill family member. If the ill person is a parent, financial support for the care of dependents must also be dealt with. Medical social workers refer and assist patients in obtaining financial assistance, food assistance and health care coverage through city, state and federal programs.
Assessment: When doctors or nurses suspect that a patient is severely mentally ill, is a drug addict or is a victim of abuse, they enlist the services of a medical social worker. The experienced opinion of a medical social worker is highly regarded by hospital staff. The medical social worker evaluates the patient and reports back to the hospital staff. Together, hospital staff and the medical social worker collaborate to find the best approach to helping mentally ill, mentally incompetent, drug Addicted or abused patients.
Advocacy: At times, a medical social worker serves as a patient advocate. The medical social worker acts as an intermediary between patients and the medical community. They are the voice for people who have communication barriers or cultural differences that make effective communication challenging. Without the medical social worker, these types of patients often fall between the cracks--their health and emotional needs unknown.

The department is a 10-bed transplant facility. Transplants are performed for malignant haematology, immunodeficiencies, non-malignant haematology, and metabolic disorders. The team has an interest in treating patients with advanced leukaemia and primary immunodeficiencies with organ involvement and immunedysregulation.
The job will offer training in all aspects of transplantation medicine including supportive care and there will be a scope to work on transplant-related projects and publish. The department is at the forefront of cutting-edge clinical work in cellular therapy, novel treatment strategies, and state-of-the-art supportive care. The unit has an excellent supportive care record with zero sepsis-related mortality due to advanced methods of targeted antimicrobial therapies. Transplant fellow will gain experience in using new targeted therapies such as antibodies to CD19, CD22, GD2, IFN-gamma, CD52, PD-1, MASP2, and inhibitors of FLT3, IL1B, bcl2 etc.
Five fellows have worked with us in the unit for the duration of one year. One fellow has established themselves as an independent consultant doing haematology-oncology and BMT, two fellows are in the process of establishing a transplant unit, one fellow is working as a haematology-oncology consultant, and one haematology-oncology naive fellow who worked in the unit after MD Paediatrics is currently doing DM in Paediatric oncology. A total of nine journal publications from the unit have been accepted so far of which seven have been accepted in international journals. All fellows have participated in transplant-related studies and have had one to three BMT-related publications during their fellowship.

oldest 450 bedded paediatric hospital established in 1929. The
hospital has received several accolades such as the Best Medical Practice Award
from European Medical Association.
As one of the India’s largest
Paediatric Haematology-oncology and Immunology departments, we see a broad
case-mix of both malignant and non-malignant disease. Between April 2019 -
March 2020, we performed 18 allogeneic transplant with 89% disease-free survival.
In the year April 2020 - March 2021, we plan to perform 40 allogeneic
transplants.
The successful applicant will
be working closely with bone marrow transplant consultants. The job will offer
training in all aspects of transplantation including the use of different
serotherapy (including alemtuzumab), appropriate use of different graft
manipulation techniques, use of novel monoclonal antibodies/therapies for
leukaemia/immunodeficiencies and transplant infectious diseases. We expect the
candidate to work on transplant related projects. In the first year, we did two
projects that have been submitted for publication.
